Our Mission and History

The Providence Health System Mission
Providence Health System continues the healing ministry of Jesus in the world of today, with special concern for those who are poor and vulnerable. Working with others in a spirit of loving service, we strive to meet the health needs of people as they journey through life.

The Sisters of Providence - A Rich Heritage
Founded in Montreal, Canada in 1844, the Sisters of Providence were well prepared for new challenges. Following their mission to minister to the needs of the poor, sick and unfortunate, they responded to communities throughout the Northwest United States. By 1900 they had established 29 hospitals, schools, orphanages, homes for the aged, shelters for the mentally ill, and Indian schools. Within two years, they would respond to yet another need. This time in Alaska.

History of Providence in Alaska
In 1902, the Sisters of Providence embarked on a long journey from Canada to Nome, Alaska, where amidst the gold rush the small town had quickly become home to over 10,000 residents. The need for health care was dire and the Sisters quickly set up a hospital and in the true spirit of the Sisters of Providence, they provided services to anyone in need, regardless of their ability to pay. Soon after their arrival, the gold rush enveloped the natural hub of central Alaska - Fairbanks. In 1910, responding again to community need, the Sisters purchased St. Joseph Hospital for $10,000. Soon, they are caring for an average of 300 patients a year. They remained in Fairbanks until 1968.

Over the next century, the Sisters were called upon to expand health care across Alaska. In 1938 they found themselves in Anchorage, and just one year later Providence Hospital opened its doors to a growing community. In the late 1990's, the organization added Providence Seward Medical Center and Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center, and Providence Hospital changed its name to Providence Alaska Medical Center. Throughout their time in Alaska, the Sisters of Providence maintained a compassionate dedication to their work. It is this devotion, compassion and care that have been a trademark of Providence for over a century.
