The following are some suggested books for parents, children, family, and friends about death.

For Parents:
  • Empty Arms:  Coping After Miscarriage, Stillbirth and Infant Death.  By Sherokee Ilse, 1982
    Guide to help parents & loved ones cope with miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death.  Sherokee Ilse has suffered both a miscarriage and the stillbirth of her first son.  She is a nationally recognized professional consultant and speaker on perinatal loss.  The book offers practical suggestions and support for decision-making at the time of the loss as well as during the days ahead.
  • Ended Beginnings:  Healing Childbearing Losses.  By Claudia Panuthos & Catherine Romeo, 1984
    A healing book showing parents how to use inner resources to grieve successfully for the loss of a child.
  • When a Baby Dies:  A Handbook for Healing & Helping.  By Rana K Limbo & Sara Rich Wheeler, 1986 This handbook provides sensitive practical information through real-life experiences of parents.
  • The Anguish of Loss.  By Julie Fritsch & Sherokee Ilse, 1988
    A moving, powerful book of photographs of sculpture and prose, depicting the author's range of emotions in coping with the death of her newborn son.
  • Still to be Born:  A Guide for Bereaved Parents Who are Making Decisions About Their Future.  By Pat Schwiebert, RN & Paul Kirck, MD, 1989. Helps consider optons involved in a future pregnancy and how they may cope in their new situation.

For Children:

  • Our Baby Died, Why?  By Susan & Jake Erling.
    A child's questions, fears, and emotions about his stillborn brother and subsequent baby.  Contains children's drawings.  Recommended for children ages 3-12.
  • Where's Jess? Centering Corporation.     
    For parents concerned about their surviving children's reaction to the loss of a baby sibling.  Questions from a real three year old.  Mentioned in People magazine and various reviews.
  • Timothy Duck Centering Corporation
    Tells the story of saying goodbye and letting go.  Where other children's books deal with death, this one deals with grief.
  • Sibling Grief Sherokee Ilse & Linda Hammer Burns.
    Grief of surviving siblings is explored.  Includes valuable coping tips for both children and parents.
  • Thumpy's Story  Nancy Dodge
    Thumpy experiences grief with sister, Bun, unexpectedly dies.  The bunnies are illustrated in their natural habitat in soft, life-like colors.  Also available in a coloring book and a workbook.
  • Talking with Children About Death
    A pamphlet with a message from Mr. Rogers.
