Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Welcome to the Pediatric Intensive Care unit at Providence. This 9-bed unit is the only place of its’ kind within the state of Alaska. Providing a wide spectrum of intensive care services for the critically ill or injured child using the latest in medical technology. In addition, we provide sedation support for various outpatient procedures.

Many pediatric patients at other hospitals who face life-threatening medical conditions requiring critical care are transferred to the Children’s Hospital at Providence’s PICU by a specialized mobile intensive care unit known as LifeGuard Air Ambulance. This highly trained team of physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists utilize self-contained life-support equipment to stabilize, treat and monitor a child upon contact at the referring facility and throughout transport via ground, helicopter or fixed-wing ambulance.

Whether a patient is admitted to The Childrens Hospital at Providence under the care of a personal physician, a staff physician or through an outlying clinic or hospital, the child becomes the center of a multidisciplinary team effort. 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Respirators, EKG monitors, intravenous tubes and the technology of today’s intensive care can bewilder a child and family. For this reason, to address virtually every patient and family concern, the medical and nursing staff are supported by an extensive family-centered team that includes patient-family representatives, social workers, case managers, childlife specialists and hospital chaplains.
