The PCRC Directions, is a service for adolescents who are in a sub-acute crisis and at risk of out-of-home placement if they continue on their current path. Providence Crisis Recovery Center services are accessed through the Providence Psychiatric Emergency Department at 563-3200.
As part of the PCRC, Directions provides adolescents, ages 12-18, with the opportunity to engage services early in a crisis. PCRC Directions is a sub-acute setting, which provides an alternative to inpatient hospitalization for psychiatric, emotional, and behavioral issues. PCRC Directions allows clients the opportunity to engage services before symptoms and behaviors warrant an acute care setting.

Clinical Emphasis
PCRC Directions is a crisis stabilization unit which uses a multi-systemic approach to treating clients. The adolescent is not considered alone, but rather treated as part of their multiple systems (home, school, neighborhood, peer group). The family system, school system, outpatient providers, even the digital environment in which an adolescent moves are all considered when developing the treatment plan. This allows the client the opportunity and responsibility to apply newly learned skills in the appropriate setting. Taking a pass with a family member to practice communication, supporting a client as they make changes on their social-networking site, engaging in a home-based family session, or taking a school pass to resolve a peer conflict are examples of system interventions. Individual and family therapy sessions typically occur at PCRC Directions, but may occur off-site if that supports the environmental changes the client is trying to make.
Length of Stay
We ask for a commitment of five to seven days from the parents and client, with the full recognition that a parent can withdraw their adolescent from the program at any time. This is a short stay. Therefore, the treatment team, clients and family remain solution-focused and goal-oriented so that discharge back to the community can happen as soon and as safely as possible.
School
PCRC Directions has an Anchorage School District special education teacher on-site every school day to provide education services. School is in session each school day from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and our schoolteacher serves as the liaison between the school district and our treatment staff.
Discharge
PCRC Directions is designed to provide brief crisis stabilization for a client with an expected return to their prior environment as soon as possible. Every attempt is made to discharge the client back to their previous placement, whether that is a single-family home, a therapeutic foster home, or a local residential facility.
Referrals
In order to ensure appropriateness for the sub-acute unit, PCRC Directions only accepts referrals through the Providence Psychiatric Emergency Department. If you believe you have an appropriate referral, please call the Crisis Line at 563-5006.
