Hand Rehabilitation Centers

 

The Hand Rehabilitation Centers at Providence Saint Joseph and Holy Cross Medical Centers are a comprehensive rehabilitation program, offering a wide range of hand and upper extremity therapy services.

Our therapists are specially trained in hand therapy. Upper extremity account for approximately one third of the work related injuries that occur each year.

These injuries can include:

  • Simple/complex lacerations
  • Fractures
  • Tendon disruption
  • Nerve compression
  • Crush injuries
  • Amputations
  • Sprains/strains
  • Cumulative trauma (soft tissue injuries resulting from repetitive use)

The Hand Rehabilitation Centers are a part of the comprehensive Rehabilitation Services Departments at Providence.  Providence and its Rehabilitation Services Department are dedicated to meeting the needs of patients through unique and customized treatment programs.

Integrated approach
Our integrated approach focuses on one goal: rehabilitating the patient to a functional, productive, and meaningful lifestyle. To achieve this goal, we provide clinic-based therapy that includes the latest in rehabilitation technology.

Experienced, certified hand therapists who have achieved advanced specialty training and recognition in hand therapy work closely with the patient, their physician and caretaker(s) to tailor the treatment program around the patient’s individual needs.

Treatment options include:
Ultrasound; Heat/cold; paraffin; fluidotherapy; iontophroesis; electrical stimulation; myofascial release; pain management; edema management; scar management; functional re-training; work conditioning & work site analysis; activities of daily living; custom splinting-pre/post surgical; soft tissue/joint mobilization; k
inesiotaping; sensory testing/re-education; amputation care; burn care; education in cumulative trauma prevention strategies; and functional active therapeutic exercise

Program Goals
To achieve our goal of rapid resolution of symptoms and return to full functional status, we employ:

  • Timely reports to employers, carriers and physicians
  • Specific, measurable goal setting for the individual job requirement

  • Carpal tunnel splinting/testing/ monitoring
  • Ergonomic classes in prevention techniques
  • Post-hire upper extremity screening

  • Static and dynamic splinting
  • Post-operative early mobilization

Outcomes
Studies have found that physical therapy is an effective treatment to decrease pain and increase function.  

Referral
Providence is able to work with most insurance companies.  A referral to the Hand Rehabilitation Center can be obtained by either contacting the Rehabilitation Department or by obtaining a prescription from your physician.  If you do not have a physician and would like a free physician referral, call the Providence Health Resource Center at 1-888-HEALING (1-888-432-5464)
