Overview
Personal attention from a board-certified nurse. The best products for breastfeeding, from breast pumps and accessories to nursing bras, pillows and clothing for tiny preemies. Expert advice from certified lactation consultants. It's all here at the Postpartum Care and Breastfeeding Center at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center

Postpartum Care
Some hospitals try to teach mothers everything before they leave the hospital. At Providence St. Vincent, mothers spend more of their hospital time resting. They get detailed information about newborn care and breastfeeding a couple days later at the Postpartum Care and Breastfeeding Center.

Each mother who gives birth at Providence St. Vincent receives an appointment for follow-up care at the center. The appointment is scheduled for one to two days after the mother leaves the hospital. Appointments last about one hour.

During the appointment, a board-certified nurse gives the mother and baby a brief physical exam. The nurse assesses how well the mother is healing and evaulates the baby for jaundice, feeding and weight gain. The nurse works closely with the mother's and baby's doctors.

The Breastfeeding Center
Mothers often have concerns about breastfeeding. The certified lactation consultants at Providence St. Vincent are recognized throughout the community for their skills and excellent service. Appointments are available for the following services:

Prenatal Consultations: A private appointment before the baby is born can help a pregnant woman prepare for successful breastfeeding and solve potential problems before they occur.

Newborn Consults: Mothers and babies can meet privately with a lactation consultant to address specific breastfeeding questions. Techniques and detailed information are explained.

Urgent Consults: Appointments are available at all stages of breastfeeding. Common concerns include slow weight gain, breast infections, recurrent pain during feedings, and returning to work.

Postpartum Guide

“Being a first-time mom stirs up a million questions. The nurse (at the Postpartum Care Center) graciously allowed me much of her valuable time and patience. I was impressed with her knowledge and experience. The clinic is comfortable and convenient. Being able to purchase nursing products at the clinic was also extremely helpful. Thank you for the wonderful services you provide.”
