Postpartum Care Center Q&A

What happens at the Postpartum Care Center?
Each mother who gives birth at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center receives an appointment for a check-up at the Postpartum Care Center. The appointment is scheduled for one to two days after the mother leaves the hospital. Appointments last about one hour. During the appointment, the mother and baby each receive a brief physical exam. An experienced mother-baby nurse helps with breastfeeding. There is plenty of time for the mother to talk with the nurse about her feelings and to ask any questions she may have.

Who pays for the appointment?
Many health insurance plans pay for this type of follow-up care. Some plans do require a small co-pay. No mother will be turned away from the center because she cannot afford to pay. Some insurance plans also pay for follow-up appointments with certified lactation consultants at the Breastfeeding Center.

Where is the center located?
The Postpartum Care and Breastfeeding Center is located in Suite 730 of the Medical Office Building (East Pavilion) at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.
