Providence Behavioral Health now offers dialectical behavioral therapy to people with difficult borderline personality disorders. Individual evaluations and therapy are available at Providence Portland Medical Center and Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.
DBT begins with 60-minute individual evaluation sessions, which are typically held weekly from one to four weeks. Following the initial evaluation, a patient will attend 50-minute individual therapy sessions and DBT Skills Training Group weekly. The 90-minute DBT Skills Training Group is available only at Providence Portland Medical Center.
DBT patients are usually in the program from six to 12 months.
Due to invalidating environments during childhood and biological factors some people react abnormally to emotional stimulation. Their levels of arousal rise more quickly, peak at higher levels and take longer to return to baseline. This explains why people with borderline personalities are known for crisis-strewn lives and extremely rapid shifts in emotion. Because of their past invalidation, they have no method for coping with these sudden, intense surges of emotion. DBT teaches skills that will give these patients the tools they need to handle emotions successfully and safely.
