Child and Adolescent Inpatient Behavioral Health

Children and adolescent behavioral health

A comprehensive treatment program for youth

The Child and Adolescent Inpatient Program, part of Providence Behavioral Health Services since 1980, offers young people who have behavioral and emotional difficulties a safe place where they and their families can begin to develop a balanced life.

Our philosophy

Growing up is not easy. Sometime children and teenagers face issues that are beyond their coping abilities. Some problems are too serious for families, schools and private counselors to manage. This can result in emotionally and physically destructive behavior.

At these times young people may need the compassionate, focused attention available within the controlled environment of a psychiatric hospital. Although difficult, these events can provide understanding, growth and healing for the young people and their families.

We offer a patient- and family-centered program, featuring:

  • Age-appropriate care
  • Flexible schedules and activities
  • Family involvement
  • Behavioral interventions
  • A blend of medical, emotional and social therapies

Our treatment team

Board-certified or board-eligible child psychiatrists lead our team of mental health experts, including nurses, mental health therapists, occupational therapists, social workers and educators.

As a teaching service, the Child and Adolescent Inpatient Program benefits also from the presence of child psychiatry fellows, nursing students and graduate social work students.

Our treatment services

Families can rest assured that their children will receive professional psychiatric care in the safe, accredited environment of Providence Portland Medical Center. The inpatient unit is designed with separate child and adolescent wings. Separate staff and programming ensure age appropriate care.

Each child is different. That’s why we develop a personalized treatment plan for each young person:

  • If a child arrives in crisis, we provide acute intervention and stabilization.
  • Each child receives a complete mental health evaluation to assure accurate diagnosis and the best possible treatment plan.
  • We offer a wide range of consultation services and therapies.
  • We connect families with resources for follow-up care.
