"Living with Dementia" seminar helps families, caregivers
Caring for someone who has Alzheimer's disease or other memory loss conditions can be overwhelming. On Saturday, June 7, Spectrum Elder Services and Providence Health & Services will present a seminar to give families and caregivers practical answers to the challenges they face.

Do you know the signs of early cognitive decline?
Nearly five million people in America suffer from Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Twice that number may have mild cognitive impairment (MCI) – a condition marked by deficient memory but no difficulty with independent living. People who have MCI transition to AD at a rate of twelve percent to fifteen percent per year. If, however, there is tissue loss in a region of the brain called the hippocampus, that rate of transition doubles to more than thirty percent.

Are you at risk?
Fill out this “Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR)”. How to use this quiz: If any of the descriptions listed on the CDR quiz seem to fit you, give yourself the number of points assigned to that statement (for example, if you see "CDR 0.5" next to a statement that describes you, give yourself 0.5 points). If your total number of points for the quiz is equal to or greater than 1.5, there is cause for concern. Talk with your doctor about contacting Providence Cognitive Assessment Clinic for an evaluation.
