Overview

Genetic counseling provides personalized cancer risk information to people who are concerned about their risk of developing cancer. While it is not possible to predict exactly who will develop cancer, it is possible to learn more about individual cancer risk factors and strategies for coping with those risks. You may want to consider having a risk assessment performed if any of the following is true for you:

You are worried that you have a high risk for developing cancer.

You or any of your blood relatives have been diagnosed with:
  • Breast cancer before age 50
  • Male breast cancer
  • Breast cancer in both breasts
  • Colon cancer before age 50
  • More than one type of cancer in the same individual

Both breast cancer and ovarian cancer have occurred in your family.

Both colon cancer and endometrial (uterine) cancer have occurred in your family.

Rare cancers have occurred in your family.

The risk assessment is free and includes information on:

Your risk of developing cancer.

Cancer prevention and screening.

Non-hereditary risk factors for cancer (e.g. diet, smoking).

Cancer risk reduction strategies.

Genetic testing, including potential benefits, limitations and emotional concerns.
