Two Studies Name Providence St. Peter Hospital Heart Program Among Best in the Nation
Top Cardiovascular Hospitals Have Lower Mortality, Complication Rates than Peers

Olympia--Providence St. Peter Hospital’s heart program has earned national recognition for clinical quality from both HealthGrades and Solucient, two independent companies that analyze hospital benchmark data. Both companies use Medicare data to review patient outcomes at virtually every hospital –nearly 6,000—in the nation.

HealthGrades named Providence St. Peter Hospital as the number one hospital in Washington State for cardiology and interventional cardiology, ranking it among the top 10 percent in the nation. The hospital also received "five star" ratings for heart attack and stroke care. In the category of "Overall Cardiac Services," Providence Everett was ranked as number one in the state, Providence St. Peter as number two and Providence Yakima as number three.

Solucient’s recently released study named Providence St. Peter Hospital as one of the Solucient 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals. The strictly empirical analysis identifies those hospitals that have achieved excellence in care, efficiency of operations and sustainability of cardiovascular performance.

This is the second time (out of four studies) that Providence St. Peter Hospital has been recognized as a Solucient 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospital. The only other hospital in western Washington recognized by Solucient for heart care was Providence Everett Medical Center, part of the same Providence Health System that owns Providence St. Peter Hospital. Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, also sponsored by the Sisters of Providence, was the only other hospital in the state to receive the 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals award.

Dr. Bill Gavin, Medical Director for the Providence St. Peter Heart Program said, " For us, this is no different than winning the World Series or the Super Bowl!" He added, " Those two awards are yet another reaffirmation that the entire hospital has a commitment to quality. You don’t win these awards without a high level of performance from everyone." Gavin also pointed out that, "HealthGrades ranked Providence hospitals as number one, two and three in the state for heart care. That says something about the Sisters of Providence."

Scott Bond, Providence St. Peter Hospital CEO/Administrator said, "The awards clearly reflect excellent programs, outstanding doctors and highly competent hospital employees. These are significant national honors and we are extremely proud of them."

Bond noted that some people are starting to look at the comparative data when selecting hospitals for specialty services. He said, "I think that most patients still rely on their physician to help them make the right choice of hospital, but some of these studies can be additional resources for them to consider."
