Emergency Center and Laboratory Addition at Providence St. Peter Hospital

Architect: Giffin Bolte Jurgens, Portland, OR

General contractor: Sellen Construction, Seattle, WA

Square feet of new building: 75,700

Seismic Structure: The building has a steel frame and concrete sheer walls. The concrete walls are designed to absorb earthquake shocks.

Total project cost: $27.5 million

Financing: The majority of the funding will come from loans secured by the Providence Health System, and some funding will come from community philanthropy. Providence St. Peter Foundation has launched a $3.3 million capital campaign and as of January 2004 has raised $2.2 million.

Emergency Center

  • 25,000 square feet (three times the size of the previous facility)
  • Computerized patient tracking and high-tech communication systems will help alleviate wait times for patients and visitors
  • 39 private patient treatment rooms
  • Four women’s health rooms
  • Two major trauma rooms
  • Six cardiac and stroke rooms with new equipment
  • Three enclosed triage booths
  • Two EENT (eye, ear, nose, throat) rooms
  • Two cast rooms
  • New family waiting area
  • Crisis services unit (mental health)
  • Rooftop helipad
  • Treated 57,000 patients at its emergency department in 2002. In 2003, the emergency center expects to serve 60,000 patients.

Laboratory

  • 16,000 square feet (twice the size of previous facility)
  • Includes cytology, hematology, chemistry, toxicology, microbiology, pathology and blood bank/transfusion services.
  • Features a new lab information system and automated instruments that analyze blood and turn out patient lab results much faster than before.
  • The lab employs about 85 medical technologists, phlebotomists, pathologists, cytotechnologists and histotechnologists.
  • Lab has an open layout with movable tables and casework designed to maximize the flexibility of work spaces.
