Cardiology

Coronary heart disease is a leading cause of health for adult men and women. To stay healthy, every adult should be aware of the risk factors. These include a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking and diabetes. If you or someone you know has one or more of these risk factors, consult your primary care physician about what steps you can take to minimize your risk.

Are you at risk for a heart attack?

A 52 year-old Newberg man, complaining of shortness of breath was referred to Providence Newberg Medical Center.  The cardiology staff ran a test with the new cardiac ultrasound machine and found a torn lining in his aorta (the large artery that carries blood from the heart arteries throughout the body - see picture). The patient was rushed by ambulance and underwent aortic replacement surgery at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland.

Providence Newberg Medical Center recently purchased a state-of-the-art cardiac ultrasound machine. This, in combination with the medical expertise, enables heart patients at Providence Newberg Medical Center to receive exceptional care.

Of the risk factors, the most important step someone can take to prevent a heart attack is to stop smoking. As difficult as quitting may seem, smoking outweighs all other risk factors combined. Exercise is also important. Exercising 30 minutes a day, four days a week, cuts an adult's risk of a heart attack by half. Providence Newberg Medical Center's Health & Lifestyle "Smoke Stoppers" and "Adult Conditioning Exercise" classes can help.
