Medical Center Volunteers

 

This list provides some general information about volunteer opportunities at Providence Alaska Medical Center. There are many other volunteer opportunities that may not be listed. If you have a special skill or gift to share, please let us know. We’d be happy to try to create a volunteer experience best suited to your interests.  How to become a volunteer.

Main Information Desk (Evening hours) - provides directions to PAMC visitors.

Providence House - tidies up kitchen and living area, check/stock linens in rooms, socializes with patients/families.

Infusion Center - answer phones greet patients, stock supply areas, serve juice and coffee to patients.

Gift Shop - Volunteers work as cashiers, make gift/flower deliveries to patient rooms, keep the store clean and well stocked.

Ambulatory Services Desk - assist Day Surgery employees by staffing the customer service desk, inform families of surgery schedules, visit with guests of PAMC give information/directions to cafeteria, coffee carts, restrooms, etc.

Heart Center Waiting -  Greeting Heart Center patients, answering telephone, monitoring the waiting area, directing patients to areas PAMC. Locating patients’ family and friends for heart center staff.

Emergency Department - Clean and restock rooms, aid patients/families, may help restrain children while getting stitches. Volunteers must be at least 17 years of age.

Patient Escort - help patients find their room and get acquainted to the unit.

Children’s Hospital At Providence - Must be 16 years or older. Visit with children, provides activities, such as painting, games or reading. Staffing the volunteer information desk.

NICU (Kuddle Korps) - Help in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit by holding, or otherwise stimulating premature infants. This is considered a high stress area because outcomes are not guaranteed, parents are dealing with issues ranging from heath complications later on, developmental differences at times, and possible financial concerns. Volunteers must be 18 years or older.

Center for Child Development - volunteers help staff with age-appropriate activities such as snack time, outdoor outings, craft activities, etc. Children range in age from six weeks to 12 years of age.

Physical/Occupational Therapies - Assist patients in various therapies. This area is reserved for volunteers who are developing a career path in physical/occupational/speech therapy.

5N/4N-Medical/Surgical/Oncology - Volunteers help answer call lights, straighten patient rooms, fill water pitchers, deliver meals, deliver mail, stock non-medical items such as toothbrushes, towels, moisturizer and prepare charts for future use.

3W-Orthopedic - Duties similar to 4/5N but patients in ortho are often more immobile.
2W-Progressive care- Volunteers perform duties similar to 4/5N. Keep coffee and tea available for visitors, route tube system paperwork and more.

CCU, IMCU, ICU Waiting area - Provide information to friends and families of patients. Provide community resource information and phone numbers provide directions within PAMC, taking phone messages and monitoring the waiting area.

Special Projects/Events - Providence Heath Fair, Children’s Miracle Network telethon, etc.
