Each class is offered four times per year, and consists of three two-hour sessions from 3:00pm - 6:00pm, once per week. The sessions consist of detailed information presented by a well rounded staff of oncology nurses, a physician, dietitian, and a chaplain. Session One: · The nature of cancer · The types of cancer treatment and their side effects · Nutrition and physical fitness Session One brings together oncology and radiation therapy nurses, a dietitian and a physical therapist. The nurses will guide you through the terminology, treatment modalities and common side effects of cancer therapies. The dietitian and physical therapist will discuss the ways to creatively deal with nourishment and exercise during this challenging time. Session Two: · Dimensions of wellness · Identifying feelings surrounding the cancer diagnosis · Mind, body and symptom management Session Two brings together an oncology nurse, a chaplain and a nurse educator. They will explore the meaning of wellness. The oncology nurse will discuss ways to manage pain and other therapy-related symptoms. The chaplain and nurse educator will share insights into complementary therapies and spirituality. Session Three: · Understanding feelings and relationships · Value of support · Resources · Celebrating life Session Three brings together support group leaders and representatives from community agencies. There will be two panel discussions: one will focus on support during treatment; the second will present resources in the community available for use during and after treatment.
