As part of one's recovery process, Step 12 suggests: "Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry the message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs." One way those in recovery try to carry the message is to perform "12th Step" work. Alcoholics Anonymous Intergroup (272-2312) can provide a link to those in recovery who wish to meet with, and offer hope to, those who are still suffering with active addiction.
Also, Breakthrough supports the 12th Step work of our alumni within the recovering community. One method of support has been the development and evolvement of our alumni group: Mirror Image. This is a group open to those who have successfully completed treatment and aftercare and are working an active program of 12 Step recovery. Members of this group, known as MIG's, volunteer their time to tell their story to others and how they have chosen a lifestyle free of alcohol and other drugs. These alumni speak with treatment groups and patients admitted to Providence Alaska Medical Center for drug or alcohol related injuries or illnesses. If you are interested in speaking with a MIG either for yourself or for someone you care about, please contact Beth Oxford at 273-0442 or boxford@provak.org.
