Ken has a Master in Education from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, with a concentration in adult education/counseling and a Bachelors of Science in Psychology from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville with a minor concentration in special education.
Ken is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a nationally certified EMDR therapist, and a nationally certified alcohol/drug counselor. Ken has over eleven years experience in chemical abuse counseling with several residential/outpatient agencies in the Anchorage area. Ken's area of expertise is addiction recovery, utilizing diverse recovery modalities, stabilizing mental health issues including trauma, motivational strategies, and anger management. Ken has developed an anger management curriculum for groups and individuals in recovery that has been accepted by the court system.
Ken has a teaching background in elementary, high school and secondary education, including teaching several college level courses in psychology. He conducts presentations in the Anchorage community in the area of clinical documentation, anger management, and adults in transition. Ken serves as a regular facilitator for the Providence Integrity Initiative Orientation for new hires. Ken has experience working in federal and state funded social programs for children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly in senior citizen programs.
Ken has integrated Motivational Enhancement Therapy with Adult Education philosophy and Humanistic/Rational Emotive Therapy/Cognitive Behavioral approaches in addressing substance abuse and mental health disorders. Ken pioneered the concept of "Enhancing the Teachable Moment" in chemical detoxification and early stage recovery to increase the level of efficacy in several chemical abuse recovery programs.
