Ride for the Susan Butcher Family Center

Riding to raise funds for cancer support and research

On April 1st, 2008, Dr. John Hall, 62, and his wife, Jane, will set off on a 4 month tour of the perimeter of the United States.  Jane will be driving a support vehicle, and John will be riding his bicycle. The day will mark the one year anniversary of Jane's diagnosis with cancer, and this quest will be a celebration of their new life journey together.

The Bike Ride Around America (B.R.A.A.) will cover over 12,000 miles and the Hall's plan to finish it in approximately 120 days. They will be riding around the country to raise funds for cancer support and research, as well as awareness about the disease. They will designate donations to the Susan Butcher Family Center, where patients and their families can receive guidance, counseling, and education throughout a patient’s cancer treatment where emphasis is on survivorship & support.

John and Jane’s family has been personally touched by the hardship of cancer. Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer in late March 2007, and subsequently had surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. They lost his mother to cancer 11 years ago.

John and Jane will begin their trek in Lompoc, California, at the cemetery where Dr. Hall's parents are buried. John and Jane had made plans to bike the periphery of the United States for September 2007, however the trip was postponed when Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since her surgery and treatments, she is doing very well, and is ready for this adventure.

Both John and Jane have been around medicine most of their lives, but this experience gave them a true understanding of the kind of support friends and family need as they face the diagnosis of cancer together. It is for this reason they plan on undertaking this challenge, and they look forward to raising money to support others dealing with a cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Dr. Hall is a graduate of UCLA Medical School and has practiced Emergency Medicine at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska for over 29 years. He hopes this trip will provide a great benefit to the Susan Butcher Family Center and all Alaskans.
