Arianna Passi had been ill for days - her dad knew something was terribly wrong when his 2-year-old didn’t dash to meet him at the door as always.
When Arianna arrived at the Children’s Hospital at Providence, she was in kidney failure. The cause: hemolytic-uremic syndrome, a deadly blood disease most likely triggered by E. coli bacteria or a viral infection. With her condition deteriorating by the hour, Arianna’s doctor would not leave her side and spent the next two nights on a cot beside her bed. The next morning Arianna went into cardiac arrest several times without warning. Her medical team revived her, but she lay unresponsive for days with serious brain and organ damage expected if she survived.
Tough as nails, Arianna fought through the damage to her small body. She left the hospital with no brain damage and no permanent effects.
