The Children’s Hospital at Providence, which came about in part because of generous donations, played a role in saving Destany Hawley’s life. Destany survived not only an eight-week premature birth but also, at age two, acute respiratory distress syndrome. At one point, her only functioning lung began to fill with fluid, and the little girl started to turn cold and grey. “We have never been so scared,” says Ted Hawley of that night, “but we didn’t give up. Many family members and friends were at the hospital to support us. The doctors, nurses and respiratory technicians gave us room to be as close to Destany as we could get. We had the feeling that we were surrounded by angels.” Destany made a miraculous recovery. Today, she is a healthy, joyful little girl, mastering the piano and learning to Irish step dance.
