Alaskans have always been recognized for their hospitality. For more than 20 years,
Providence House has embodied this Alaskan hospitality, providing a home away from home for patients and their families. Providence House exists today because of the tremendous support of the Anchorage community. The construction of the original 15-room building was an old-fashioned barn raising, with friends donating supplies and labor to realize a well-planned dream. In 1985, a new wing was added to meet rising demand, bringing the room total to 28. Today, Providence House consistently runs in excess of 90 percent occupancy. During the busy summer months in particular, the demand for Providence House service exceeds our capacity. The time is right for Providence and the community to build a new Providence House.
Home Away from Home:
Building the New Providence Hickel House
As the premier medical center in Alaska, Providence serves many of the most remote areas in the United States. Many rural Alaskans turn to Providence House when a loved one is in need of medical care, and that often requires unexpected and costly travel to Anchorage. In emergencies, for example, friends or loved ones often accompany a patient on Air Medivac, Providence Alaska LifeGuard flights and seldom have time to prepare. At Providence House, they find not only a place to stay, but also donated food, toiletry items, and even clothing. Having this home away from home makes an important difference for families during a time
of crisis.
