Over 2000 individuals receive a cancer diagnosis each year in the State of Alaska. Cancer remains the number one cause of death in Alaska since 1990. The impact of cancer is not only on the patient but the entire family: physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially.
The Susan Butcher Family Center offers children, teens and families support for coping and healing from a cancer diagnosis in a welcoming and compassionate environment.
Mission
As caring people of Alaska we offer care and compassion for children and teens.
Purpose
Offer support, counseling and education for children and teens whose adult family member has experienced a cancer diagnosis. Services are provided by licensed clinical and educational staff on an individual, family and group counseling basis in a safe and healing environment. Services are provided without a cost to the family.
Program Services
• Education for families about the psychosocial impact of cancer
• Comprehensive assessment of child/teen needs
• Collaboration with schools and other community organizations
• Counseling for children/teens/families:
• Individual (cognitive)
• Grief counseling
• Group
• Art Therapy
• Pet Therapy
• Music Therapy
• Expressive Movement
• Education and interventional consultation program for teachers and others
• Tutoring program on site
• Collaborate with colleges to work with training programs.
• Resource materials including books, computer access, pamphlets

To arrange visits and/or appointments, please call 907-212-6876. Appointments are available 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Open lab for family activities is available 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Friday (please call for availability).
