Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center Conducts Survey to Assess Community Health Needs

Kodiak, Alaska - Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center (PKIMC), will be conducting a community health assessment for 2008. The purpose of the assessment is to produce a comprehensive health report to inform the community and to help PKIMC develop an action plan to address the most critical health issues facing the Kodiak area.

PKIMC will use face-to-face interviews to collect community input. The face-to-face interviews will take place on “Survey Saturday†March 15, 2008 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Face-to-face interviews will be conducted at local community gathering places. The brief survey will ask community members about their health concerns, experiences, and access to health care.

If asked to participate in the health assessment survey, community members are encouraged to take a few minutes to share their views. Results of the survey are critical to assist in addressing the health needs of the Kodiak Service area.

Kodiak Island Health Care Foundation (KCHC) received $750,000 for both new construction and rehabilitation of the Kodiak Community Health Center which is currently co-located with the Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center.  As a result of unique co-location of the two facilities and the subsequent collaboration, access to health care has dramatically increased for Kodiak residents. The new facility, which will allow KCHC to expand its oral health care program to address preventative, diagnostic, and emergency dental care on site, will include dental suites, waiting rooms, reception rooms, offices, labs, and exam rooms.

Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center Receives ACR Accreditation

Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center in Kodiak, Alaska, has been awarded a 3-year term of accreditation as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology. The ACR, headquartered in Reston, VA, awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer review evaluation of the practice.

Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualificationsof the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to theACR's Committee on the Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report. The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
