Medical Air Tranpsort - Safety

Safety is not just our priority, it is part of our value system and encompasses all operations.

BK117-C1 Helicopter  safety features include:
• Twin-turbine engines that provide up to a maximum of 1,500 shaft horsepower. If one engine fails, the helicopter can still fly.
• Weather Radar.
• Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning and Obstacle Avoidance Warnings Systems.
• Fully coupled Auto-Pilot system.
• GPS Satellite technology.

Our communications base is equipped with sophisticated weather stations. In questionable weather, the pilot determines if the helicopter can fly safely, without knowledge of the patient's condition.

Lifeguard Alaska's safety committee meets quarterly to discuss all safety related issues. The committee is directly linked to the program's quality improvement (QI) program. Team members include: Safety Officer, Aviation Vendor Safety Officer, Maintenance, Pilots, Communications, Ramp, and Management Personnel.

Achieving CAMTS accreditation is an attribute to our safety commitment.
