It is important that you arrive on time for your procedure. It is also important that you have taken any medication(s) you were instructed to take, that you come dressed appropriately, and that you have taken care of all your personal matters including arranging transportation and a caregiver for you at home.
Here are some suggestions to make this part of the process run smoothly.
Arrive Early
Plan to arrive 1 to 1 1/2 hours before your scheduled procedure. This allows for any additional lab work or tests to be completed that your doctor may order that day. While you do have an appointment for your procedure, sometimes events occur that cause schedules to change. We will make every effort to keep you comfortable during your stay here.
Clothing, Jewelry, & Other Valuables
Before your visit, shower and dress in loose, comfortable clothing. Think about where on your body you are having your surgical procedure and whether parts of your wardrobe, such as a belt or tight cuff, might bind or restrict that area afterward. You should be as comfortable as possible when you get ready to go home.
Prior to your procedure, you will be asked to remove all your clothing and we will provide you with a hospital gown, robe and slippers. For safety reasons women should not wear makeup (especially mascara) or perfume. We will make every effort to ensure your privacy and dignity during your visit. Please speak to your nurse if you are menstruating or have other special concerns. For your safety, all rings must be removed and may be cut off if you are unable to remove them.
Please see your jeweler before coming in the hospital if your rings are tight and cannot be removed easily. Also, remove all of your other jewelry, including all body piercings. For security of your valuables, please leave all jewelry at home. If you have expensive jewelry that you are taking off at the hospital we can provide the option of using the hospital safe. This takes extra time to arrange so please keep that in mind when you arrive. Leave all other valuables at home. You will not need money. If you plan on signing an Advance Directive Packet the only thing you will need is your diver's license.
Medications
On the morning of your procedure, take any medications your doctor has allowed with a small amount of water.
Personal Matters
It is important to arrange for someone to speak on your behalf in case of an emergency. It is also a good idea to arrange for someone to take care of your children or pets in case your visit is extended overnight or longer.
Transportation Home
As a safety precaution, we do not dismiss patients who plan to take a taxi home unless a friend or family member is with you. Whenever possible, arrange for a friend or family member to pick you up after your procedure and assist you in getting home safely. For safety of patients, any patient that has received anesthesia must have a caregiver for 24 hours or will not be released. Please establish your pick-up time before your procedure.
