Each year, as part of our Community Benefits Program, Providence Health System in Alaska sets aside a portion of its net income to help support individuals, projects and programs throughout the state.
During 2006, Providence assisted more than 406,196 individuals by providing nearly $29.5 million in charity care, community programs and education, and other health care services. Some examples of this work include:
Parish Nursing
This developing program empowers volunteer nurses to use their skills and talents in their faith communities. They provide direction and support for those in need for services from medication management to health care screenings. Providence provides the education assistance for these nurses.
Alaska SafeKids
This 18-year-old program continues to be a leader in local and statewide communities in preventing childhood injuries, and Providence is proud to underwrite the program by providing funding for its coordinator position. This program is involved in many statewide child safety education programs, including bike helmet education, the Kids Don’t Float awareness campaign, safety walks, and car seat checks. In addition, Providence funds the purchase of car seats and bike helmets that are distributed to those in need statewide.
International Missions
Providence is also proud to serve the global community by identifying and sending equipment and supplies to the Providence International Missions warehouse for distribution to 25 different third world countries. This is made possible through a partnership with TOTE, which provides free shipping from Alaska to Washington. Two shipments were sent from Alaska in 2005 containing 11 beds, 5 stretchers and a surgery table.
