Providence is very pleased that the Municipality passed the ordinance ammending the kid's helmet law. The new law will require that children age 15 and younger wear helmets when riding a bike. We anticipate the law to take effect within the next 60 days, as of Aug 23rd. We will be working hard with the Municipality to determine the best community-wide distribution method. Once determined, we will announce to the community how to participate in our Alaska Safe Kid's helmet program.

Childhood injury prevention is a critical mission of Providence Alaska Medical Center and the Children's Hospital at Providence. In 1987, Providence Alaska Medical Center became the lead agency in the state for Safe Kids Alaska. The mission of Safe Kids Alaska is to address all unintentional, preventable injuries to Alaska's children 15 years and under. We are part of the Safe Kids Worldwide Campaign in Washington DC.
Children's safety fairs, snowmobile programs, bike rodeos and helmet education, child passenger safety (CPS) certification and education programs, the annual Children's Walk to School and Bus Day, fire safety, smoke detector and CO education, and Kid's Don't Float are a few of the health and safety programs available to children and adults throughout the state. Coalitions and Chapters of Safe Kids Alaska were established statewide.
The program is aided in its efforts by Providence's Safety Seal, a life-size character who has become the symbol of Providence injury prevention.
