Newborn Intensive Care Unit
Our 38-bed level III unit is the regional referral center for the State of Alaska. We provide developmentally supportive care to premature and acutely ill babies in a family-centered environment. Staffed with specially trained physicians, nurse practitioners, and bedside nurses, the unit offers the highest level of care available in the State.
Certified lactation consultants are available to assist new mothers in breastfeeding issues for the premature and acutely ill baby.
Books and articles about care specific to premature and acutely ill babies are available at the bedside through the nursing staff or in the Family Resource Library. Families may conduct their own search to get specific information about prematurity and common complications in newborns.
Parents for Parents, a support network of graduate parents offers unique insights into the NICU and offers tips on how to parent and NICU infant. Information is available through the parent and community coordinator at 261-5895.
Upon discharge, an active network of providers support the families and the developmental needs of their child.
Undergoing renovations, the NICU will have available in the summer of 2003 6 private patient care rooms with attached parenting rooms. Integrating the concept of family-centered care, the 6 private patient care areas and parenting rooms will give families the tools they need to better cope with the hospitalization of their newborn.
