An Electro Physiological (EP) study will determine what type of rapid heart rhythm is causing your symptoms. For some types of rapid arrhythmias, your doctor may recommend a catheter ablation. A catheter ablation is used to destroy abnormal electrical pathways or groups of cells that cause some rapid heartbeat arrhythmias.
The procedure for a catheter ablation is similar to the EP study in that several pacing catheters are placed via the groin and shoulder veins into your heart to identify the pathways. A catheter using radiofrequency is used to heat the tissue causing the abnormal rhythm, which causes a scar to form which blocks the abnormal electrical impulses from going in that direction. The procedure takes from 1-4 hours and you will be given IV medication to help you relax and sleep.
You will need to lay flat for six hours after the catheters are removed to allow the areas to begin to heal. The nurse will check on you frequently. You will need to let the nurse know immediately if you notice any signs of bleeding or pain at the sites, or any numbness or tingling in your leg. Usually you will remain in the hospital at least overnight.
