A Unique Educational/Support Group for Patients and Their Family Members
The Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Group

The introduction of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) led to a revolution in the treatment of people with potentially life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Research and clinical experience demonstrate that ICDs save lives and have a positive effect on quality of life; however,

people with ICD and their loved ones must cope with the challenges of recovering from and adjusting to life after ICD implantation.

Providence Alaska Medical Center is sensitive to these challenges and has established an ICD education/support group that meets twice a year. Facilitated by a Registered Nurse, the ICD Education/Support Group creates an environment that offers moral support and problem solving, as well as education and information sharing.   Lectures provided by a team of Providence professionals such as an exercise physiologist, dietitian, pharmacist, and social worker include information on the

following topics:

 Exercise and Heart Disease

Heart Smart Eating

 Cardiac Medications

Psycho-Social issues

 Spiritual Concerns

Support Groups

Support Groups are
for everyone!
One of the hardest decisions patients are often forced to make is to reach out for help in dealing with a chronic illness.  The support groups offered here can be important tools for learning to live success-fully with a chronic disease.  Being with others is an important part of this process; sometimes just talking with others who are "walking in your shoes" is the best medicine.  For family members and caregivers, these support groups are also important.  Often, it is those closest to the patient who need help processing feelings and emotions.  Please call (907)261-3664 for more information.
