Providence Maternity Center knows that you want the best of everything for your new baby. That's why we have developed a program with the education and support you need to make breastfeeding a great experience for you and your baby.
Before your baby is born
Plan on attending one of our monthly "Breastfeeding 101" classes. This class, taught by a certified lactation consultant, will teach you what you need to know to get breastfeeding off to a great start. Topics covered include: benefits and mechanics of breastfeeding; how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk; how to avoid sore nipples; and much, much more. The cost is $35 per person/couple (fee includes textbook).
One on one consultations are available to discuss any personal issues with a Lactation Consultant. Call 212-2574 to set up an appointment.
In the delivery room
Our Labor & Delivery nurses are trained to help you with your baby's first feeding. We encourage you breastfeed your baby within one hour of birth. That's when babies are the most alert and ready to feed for the first time.
If you have a C-Section, you can nurse your baby in the recovery room as soon as you are stable. Your nurse will tell you when it is time and help you with the feeding.
On the Mother-Baby unit
Our Mother-Baby nurses are all trained to help you with breastfeeding around the clock.
One of our Board Certified Lactation Consultants will check in to see how breastfeeding is going for you. They work 7 days a week (except major holidays) from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Once you are home
Not sure if breastfeeding is going just right? Come in for a private consultation with one of our Lactation Consultants. They can weigh your baby, and help out with challenging breastfeeding situations. Call 212-2574 to make an appointment.
Come to Cuddlers - the parent/baby group that meets every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday (the Saturday group does not meet during the summer months) from 12-1 pm in the Maternity Center Classroom at the old Providence House. It is Entrance #6. This is a great place to meet other moms, dads and babies and learn from everyone's experiences.
