Why seasonal food is good for you

We all know that we should have a diet full of fruits and vegetables. Along with that, we should eat fruits and vegetables that are in season locally.

Here are four reasons why eating seasonal food is good for you.

  1. Cheaper
When crops are in season, they’re less expensive to buy. Because there’s an abundant supply, fruits and vegetables can take center stage in your meal planning without wreaking havoc on your budget.
  2. Good for the environment
Produce that’s seasonally available means that it didn’t travel from another continent like South America. Less oil and gas were used to transport the produce from where it was grown to your grocery store or farmer’s market.
  3. Less preservatives/chemicals
When fruits and vegetables have to travel far, they’re prepared for shipment to endure their entire journey. This can mean they’re covered in preservatives, like wax, to prolong their shelf life. Eating what’s in season locally can lessen the amount of chemicals you’re exposed to.
  4. Tastes better
When produce is grown farther away, it has to be harvested early and may not have grown fully. It might have less nutrients and may not taste as good because of moisture lost along the way. Buy what’s in season and your taste buds will thank you.

So what’s in season for fall?

Keep these seasonal foods in mind when you’re at the store this week:

  • Apples
  • Quince
  • Mushrooms
  • Winter squash
  • Sage
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Pears
  • Pumpkins
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cauliflower
