Pharmacy Service - A Tradition of Excellence
The Providence Portland PGY-1 Residency Program has been built upon a tradition of excellence in pharmacy services. Providence pharmacy departments in Portland are leaders in the implementation of technology and progressive pharmacy services. We practice collaborative drug therapy management in multiple settings including acute care, ambulatory care, home care, and elder care. Our Primary Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialists received an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) “Best Practices in Health-System Management Award” for their multi-site collaborative pharmacotherapy clinics.
We have acute care pharmacies in Providence Portland Medical Center (PPMC), Providence St. Vincent Medical Center (PSVMC) and Providence Milwaukie Hospital (PMH). Together over 150 FTEs of pharmacists, technicians and support personnel are employed. Both PPMC and PSVMC provide a complete 24-hour scope of progressive pharmacy services, including several pharmacist-managed collaborative drug therapy protocols. Within ambulatory care, our Primary Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialists provide both disease management and collaborative drug therapy management services along with research within a primary care practice environment.
In addition, we operate three pharmacy managed outpatient anticoagulation clinics. In home care/hospice our pharmacists operate as part of the health-care team, managing patients’ home and end-of-life therapies. Our Elderplace program, a managed care program for the frail elderly, includes clinical pharmacy specialists practicing collaboratively in multiple clinic settings.
Finally, our managed care pharmacists are involved in medication therapy management, formulary management, guideline development, and drug utilization review for our Providence Health Plan. Within all of our settings there is the commitment to developing and expanding the pharmacist’s role in direct patient care.
We have effectively integrated our residency program within our pharmacy services throughout the Portland area, providing the resident a diverse learning experience with strengths in acute care, ambulatory care and managed care pharmacy services.
Residency Purpose Statement
The purpose of the Providence PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Training program is to provide the resident with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide evidenced-based patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams in an integrated practice environment.
In addition, the program will develop the resident’s skills in managing and improving the medication-use system, including patient safety and quality assessment processes. The program will provide the resident with knowledge and skills in effective project management and in utilization of medical informatics – both for direct patient care and in the provision of effective drug information. Finally, the program will develop the resident’s skills in medication and practice-related education and training, including development of effective practice-based teaching and oral presentation skills.
Areas Of Focus
As a result of the diversity and strengths of the types of learning experiences offered within the Providence Health and Services PGY-1 Residency, our program allows the resident the flexibility to develop an “area of focus” during the residency year. The areas of focus you can choose include: acute care, ambulatory care and managed care.
Additionally, the resident has the option of doing a general PGY-1 residency without an area of focus. Required versus elective rotations depend upon the area of focus for the resident.
Salary And Benefits

Relocation assistance is available if you are moving from outside the Portland area.
