Dr. Santamarina has conducted original research about cardiovascular surgery at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and hyperacute rejection in allograft cardiac transplantation at the University of Minnesota.

He published a book chapter entitled “Cardiac Surgery” in Clinical Cardiology for the Elderly and has also published a thesis regarding heart disease and diabetes.
