Clinical Case Presentation Educational Guidelines

Purpose:
Traditionally, practitioner education has benefited from collegial discussions of a specific patient's care, reviewing the multiple approaches to any single clinical problem. The purpose of this policy is to facilitate the discussion of actual cases, openly discussing diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in an educational environment that is non judgmental and non threatening.

Policy:
1) Cases will be identified by a practitioner or screened from medical records using pre agreed upon criteria. These criteria may be similar to, but will NOT be linked to, QA/QI or peer review screening criteria.

2) All conferences that include clinical case presentations will have an identified medical staff member as chairperson (presumably department chairperson for department meetings).

3) The chairperson will

  • get the approval of the attending physician to present the case for discussion
  • moderate the conference/presentation

4) The case will be blinded for patient and physician identifiers.

5) No minutes will be kept.

6) Attendees will sign in and appropriate CME credit will be given.

7) The medical education office will be responsible for

  • assigning credit for attendance
  • keeping a log of topics discussed
  • acting to assure that any questions or concerns arising out of clinical case presentations are addressed by the appropriate medical staff or hospital committee.
