The goals of this project are:

  • Improve the evaluation and treatment of osteoporosis in patients admitted to the hospital with a hip fracture;
  • Improve the clinical outcomes of patients with hip fractures.

The patients included in this project will be patients with hip fractures who are:

  • 65 years or older or;
  • 10 years or later past menopause or;
  • Taking glucosteroids for 3 months or longer.

The goals of the project will be achieved by:

  • Evaluating osteoporosis with urinary NTx (cross-linked N-telopeptides of type I collagen) / Creatinine ratio and serum Calcium and TSH levels upon admission along with a baseline DEXA scan prior to discharge;
  • Treating osteoporosis with Risedronate (Actonel, Proctor & Gamble) a pyridinyl bisphosphonate, Vitamin D and calcium supplements;
  • Collecting follow-up data to assess whether the treatment is effective by measuring urinary NTx/Cr ratio six weeks post discharge to determine whether the patient is taking the Actonel and obtaining a repeat DEXA scan one year post discharge to compare the baseline study and assess the efficacy of the treatment;
  • Improve clinical outcomes by initiating standardized nutritional supplementation protocols and standardized prophylaxis against deep venous thrombosis while patients are in the hospital.
