Clinical outcomes and patient safety recognized
For the third time, Providence Everett Medical Center has been named one of the Top 100 Hospitals in America, earning kudos in several categories including clinical outcomes and patient safety.
Providence is one of only three hospitals in Washington—and the only one in the Puget Sound region—to make the cut.
Better performance, better care
As a Top 100 winner, Providence is shown to achieve higher survival rates and to keep more patients complication-free, compared to hospitals that did not make the list. The study method examines data from Medicare patients; researchers estimate that if all Medicare patients received the same level of care as those in the Top 100 Hospitals:
-
An additional 106,312 patients would survive each year.
-
More than 117,000 patient complications would be avoided annually.
-
The average patient stay would decrease by more than half a day.
If the same standards were extended beyond Medicare patients to all hospital patients, the impact would be even greater.
The Top 100 study recognized performance for 2005. Gail Larson, CEO, notes that the honor is especially symbolic since it was earned in the same year that Providence celebrated 100 years of service to the community. She credits the hospital’s physicians and employees for earning the award through their consistent hard work and commitment.
“This is an amazing accomplishment and comes as a direct result of the incredible dedication to our mission that every one of our physicians and employees demonstrates daily,” she says.
The "100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks for Success" study, conducted by Solucient, categorizes hospitals according to bed size, teaching status, and residency program involvement, then ranks them compared to others within their group. Providence Everett was one of only 20 hospitals nationwide, and the only one in Washington, to be recognized in the “Large Community Hospital” category.
