However, if you have suffered an injury or have joint pain from arthritis that interferes with walking, exercise, recreation or work, having joint replacement surgery can be life-changing. An orthopedic surgeon can replace your injured or damaged joint with a new synthetic joint, relieving your pain and giving you more mobility. Keeping You Informed Every Step of the Way At Providence Regional, we share information with you upfront about what happens before, during and after your surgery. Before your surgery and throughout your treatment, we focus on wellness, group rehabilitation and the involvement of family or friends. We're here to ease your anxiety and make sure you have the best possible recovery. Education Class Helps You Prepare A couple of weeks before your surgery, your orthopedic surgeon’s office contacts you to schedule an education class with other patients who are having joint replacement surgery. In class, you'll learn about the details of your surgery and what to expect during your hospital stay. You'll have the opportunity to view equipment, discuss treatments and therapies and meet the orthopedic team who'll take care of you during your stay. Coaches Offer Support and Motivation You will be asked to bring along a family member or friend who will act as your coach throughout your preparation and rehabilitation. Your coach should be available to accompany you to the pre-surgery education class and post-operative therapy sessions, as well as assist you at home as needed throughout your recovery. Having a coach participate in your care can build your confidence, which typically leads to a faster recovery and earlier discharge from the hospital. Getting Back to an Active Lifestyle Patients who have total hip or total knee replacements typically recover quickly. You can expect to walk the first day after surgery and be discharged from the hospital two to three days after surgery. You and your coach receive complete instructions on medications, follow-up care and your exercise/therapy program. Most patients return to driving in 2-4 weeks, dancing in 4-6 weeks and golfing in 6-12 weeks. All of us here at the Providence Regional are dedicated to help you return home and get back to an active lifestyle.
