Dieter Schmidt, MD, dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, has completed two residencies and is double board certified. His special interests include early detection, treatment and management of skin cancer and Mohs micrographic surgery. Dr. Schmidt has written numerous articles and white papers published in national and international journals, and frequently presents educational programs on Mohs surgery and other related topics.
Effective Cancer Treatment
Dr. Schmidt is one of only a handful of physicians in the Puget Sound region trained in Mohs micrographic surgery, which offers a cure rate of up to 99 percent for certain types of skin cancer, even when other forms of treatment have failed.
The Moh’s procedure is an outpatient procedure performed right in the medical office setting. It involves a systematic removal and microscopic examination of skin—one layer at a time. Since the cancerous tissue is removed selectively, down to its roots, the procedure preserves as much healthy tissue as possible optimizing both function and appearance. Therefore, it is often the procedure of choice for patients with cancers in areas such as the lips, nose, ears and eyelids.

Dermatologic care when prescribed for medical reasons is often covered by health insurance. Providence Physician Group accepts most major insurance plans. If care is being sought for purely cosmetic reasons, insurance may not cover some services.
