Did you know?
 
• Homes with smoke alarms typically have a death rate that is 40-50% less than the rate for homes without alarms.
• Fires and burns are the fifth leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under. 
• Children, especially those ages 5 and under, are at the greatest risk from home fire-related death and injury.


Action Plan - Fire prevention starts with you! 

Preparation and education are key elements of preventing fire tragedies. 
Here are a few simple steps for you to help prevent a fire in your home. 

• Purchase a smoke alarm.   Smoke alarms are available at a variety of price points; they can be battery operated or electrically hard wired in your home.  
 
• Install the smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, making sure that there is an alarm outside every separate sleeping area. New homes are required to have a smoke alarm in every sleeping room and all smoke alarms must be interconnected.

• Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (remember, smoke rises). Ceiling mounted alarms should be installed at least four inches away from the nearest wall; wall-mounted alarms should be installed four to 12 inches away from the ceiling.

• Test smoke alarms monthly ; follow the manufacturer's instructions.  

• Replace smoke alarms batteries once a year , or as soon as the battery chirps warning that the battery is low. 

• Create and practice an escape route with your family .  Mark the two ways out of every room, including doors and windows. 

• Choose a safe meeting place outside the home .  Make sure to mark this on your escape plan.   

• Assign a person in the family to assist infants and older adults in the fire drill and in case of an emergency.   

• Know what your smoke alarm sounds like.  Get out of the house, call 911 and stay out of the house until the fire department arrives.

Tips for Fire Safety:

 1 Keep matches and lighters out of children's reach and sight.
 2 Never use matches or lighters as a source of amusement for children.
 3 Maintain a safe distance (36 inches) between space heaters and anything that can burn.
 4Test smoke alarms monthly; install a carbon monoxide detector in a central location outside sleeping areas.
 5 Create and practice an escape plan with your family.

BURNS

Did you know?
• Burns have long been recognized as among the most painful and devastating injuries a person can sustain and survive. 
• Scald burn injury (caused by hot liquids or steam) is the most common type of burn-related injury among young children, while flame burns (caused by direct contact with fire) are more prevalent among older children. 
• All children are also at risk for contact, electrical and chemical burns. 
• It is important to remember that young children have thinner skin than older children and adults, their skin burns at lower temperatures and more deeply. 
• A child exposed to hot tap water at 140 degrees Fahrenheit for three seconds will sustain a third-degree burn, an injury requiring hospitalization and skin grafts. 
• Children, especially those ages 4 and under, may not perceive danger, have less control of their environment, may lack the ability to escape a life-threatening burn situation and may not be able to tolerate the physical stress of a burn injury.

Tips for Burn Safety

 1Set water heater to 120 degrees or lower.
 2Do not place hot food or liquids near the counter's edge or within a child's reach.
 3Do not hold children while cooking.
 4Keep electrical cords out of reach of children.
 5Make sure children are out of reach while removing food from the stove or microwave.
