Specialized Expertise
The certified nurse-midwives on staff at Providence each made a choice to specialize in obstetrics (pregnancy, labor and delivery), and have received advanced training in this field.  All are registered nurses, have completed an accredited training program, and are nationally certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.  In addition, most have earned a Master's degree specializing in midwifery.  The Midwifery Care team includes physicians who are available for referral and consultation in high-risk cases, plus nutritionists and counselors who have special training in caring for expectant mothers.

What You Can Expect
When you choose Providence Midwifery Care, you can expect your certified nurse-midwife to guide you through your pregnancy and to be with you during labor and delivery.

During your pregnancy
At your first visit, your certified nurse-midwife will talk to you about your medical history and give you a complete physical examination.  Together, you will make plans for your care.  Advice from counselors and dietitians is available.  You will have regular follow-up visits and plenty of time for questions.  If high-risk factors affect your pregnancy, a physician will become involved in your care.

Planning the delivery
Your certified nurse-midwife will talk to you in advance about your birthing plan, including different delivery options, birthing positions and medication.  Information is available to help you decide if you want to have a natural childbirth or use pain medication or anesthesia.

Your delivery process
You will deliver your baby in the Family Maternity Center in the Providence Everett Pavilion for Women and Children.  This offers a comfortable, home-like setting where families experience the entire birth process of labor, birth and recovery, all in the luxury of a private birthing suite designed with patient and family comfort in mind.

Your certified nurse-midwife will be with you in your suite, encouraging you and helping you cope with discomfort.  Your provider will delivery your baby, and afterward will stay close by to check on you and help you if you need it.

Your family is encouraged to take part in your pregnancy, from prenatal visits through delivery and time to go home.  To help you prepare for delivering your child and being a parent, we offer a variety of classes on early pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, as well as parenting support groups.
