Executive Bios

Jack Friedman, Chief Executive Officer

Jack Friedman is Chief Executive Officer of Providence Health Plan. In his role, Jack is responsible for the strategic direction and operations of a health plan that serves commercial employers, individuals, Medicare and Medicaid recipients. Providence also offers a network of providers through its preferred provider program that serves another 350,000 people in Oregon and Washington. In addition, Providence operates a workers compensation program that manages the medical costs associated with injured workers and serves approximately 350,000 Oregon employees.

Jack held several positions with Providence Health Plan prior to accepting his current position in 2000. Prior to joining Providence in 1988, Jack served as the executive director of the Greater Portland Business Group on Health, a coalition of employers dedicated to improving the cost and quality of health care. Prior to that position, Jack was employed as a benefit and pension consultant with Frank B. Hall Consulting Co. He also worked as a business reporter with The Portland Business Journal from 1984 to 1986.

Jack graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1976, where he earned a bachelors degree in anthropology. He then went on to receive a PhD in anthropology from Rutgers University in 1983. Jack serves on the Boards of the Health Plan Alliance, Stand for Children, and Community Health Partnership.

Alison Schrupp, Chief Operations Officer

Alison Schrupp is an energetic and highly motivated leader who thrives on creating and sharing a vision, building loyalty and trust, and creating an environment of teamwork, pride and excellence. She has served as Providence Health Plan's Chief Operations Officer for the last 11 years and has over 31 years of health insurance industry experience.

Alison is currently responsible for service operations for commercial, Medicare and Medicaid product lines affecting approximately 290,000 members. This includes claims, Customer Service, billing, training, Providence RN, Office Services and general administration. Prior to becoming an employee of Providence Health Plan, Alison worked for Blue Shield of California and the Rocky Mountain Health Care Corporation in management positions in operations and human resources at both companies.

Alison is a dynamic public speaker and volunteers for Quiet Waters Outreach, an organization providing respite services for people with developmental disabilities and their caregivers, and Special Olympics-Oregon. Alison earned her law degree at the University of Nottingham in Nottingham, England and a post-graduate diploma in administrative studies at the Royal Air Force College in Cranwell, England.

Michael White, Chief Financial Officer

Michael White, the chief financial officer for Providence Health Plan, is responsible for the financial management of the organization. He oversees the financial planning process, general accounting and financial reporting, risk and reimbursement, underwriting and contracting. He is responsible for meeting targets and setting premiums.  Michael is a thoughtful leader and is grounded in Providence’s mission and core values. He enjoys teamwork and appreciates many points of view when making decisions.

Prior to his current position, Michael was the associate chief financial officer for Providence Health & Services Oregon Region where he oversaw central finance functions, three hospital service areas and capital planning. In 1992, he joined Providence as the chief financial officer for the Providence Medical Group. Michael started his career at Arthur Anderson in 1982, in Seattle, Washington, in the audit and advisory division. He left Arthur Anderson as an audit manager after ten years of service.

Michael received a Bachelor of Arts in business with an emphasis in accounting from the University of Washington. He earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Oregon's Oregon Executive MBA Program while working at Providence as the associate chief financial officer. Michael was the valedictorian of his MBA program.

Outside of work, Michael enjoys spending time with his family and is happily married. He also is active in the community. He has served on several boards and is involved in his children’s activities.

Kevin Keck, MD, FACP, Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Kevin Keck has been a physician executive for 22 years. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and is a published author. Dr. Kevin Keck has been with Providence for the last eight years and is currently the Chief Medical Officer for Providence Health Plans. He led a successful turnaround of Providence Medical Group and created a robust array of medical management interventions, which resulted in improvements in quality and medical costs.

Prior to joining Providence he was a Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California Davis, Medical Director of Northern California Med Partners and ran a 100- physician department at Kaiser in Sacramento. Dr. Kevin Keck developed a successful budgetary turnaround coupled with substantial improvements in patient access and satisfaction. He also has an engineering background.

In Dr. Kevin Keck's spare time he practices urgent care medicine and volunteers at two charity clinics. He also has a long history of volunteer contributions to the community in youth serving programs.

Barbara Christensen, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer

Barbara Christensen, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer for Providence Health Plans, has over 22 years experience in the health insurance industry. Prior to joining Providence Health Plans, she was with Kaiser Permanente. Her current duties include management of statewide sales, marketing and product development for Providence Health Plans commercial and Medicare products.

Barbara is a graduate of the University of Oregon and holds an MBA from the University of Washington.

Dan Stevens, Regional Director of Provider Networks

Dan Stevens has served as regional director of provider networks for two years, overseeing the provider network activities for Providence Health Plan. He is responsible for improving member access to physicians, partnering with our providers to offer disease management and preventive medicine, helping to reduce health care costs through provider pay-for-performance initiatives and promoting consumer-driven health care.

Dan started his career at Providence Health & Services in 1996 as a health services researcher working on effectiveness and outcome studies in CORE, the Center for Outcomes Research and Education. He then became a clinical service line administrator with service line accountability for medicine programs at Providence Health & Services, Portland Service Area, responsible for programs such as critical care, inpatient hospitalists, gastroenterology and dialysis. Subsequently, Dan took on the role of assistant administrator at Providence Portland Medical Center, which deepened his knowledge of health care delivery systems.

Dan earned his Master of Business Administration at Portland State University while working as the Clinical Service Line Administrator. Dan also earned his Master of Public Health at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and worked his way through school as a health services researcher in the Department of Public Health at OHSU. Dan graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine with a Bachelor of Arts in German.

Outside his day to day responsibilities, Dan chairs the Providence Portland Service Area Sustainability Council and volunteers as an adjunct faculty member with Providence Internal Medicine Residency Program teaching population based health to Providence medical residents. Coaching his son's baseball and soccer teams is a source of pride and joy for Dan. You may also find Dan running or cycling in Portland on the weekends.

Sr. Margaret Pastro, S.P. Director of Mission Integration

Sr. Margaret Pastro has served as the director of Mission Integration for Providence Health Plan for 11 years. The Mission of Providence Health Plan and its sponsor organization, Providence Health & Services, calls on all employees, as people of Providence, to reveal God's love to all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service. Together with our core values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence and stewardship, our Mission is fully integrated under Sr. Maggie's leadership into all facets of Providence Health Plan's business practices.

Sr. Maggie is active in Providence Health Plan's community benefits program, which provides program grants and volunteers to partner organizations serving at-risk communities throughout Oregon and southwest Washington. In addition, she introduces employees to Providence's Mission during their orientation and provides spiritual and emotional support during times of employee transition. She is also involved in ethics and ethical decision-making processes.

Sr. Maggie entered the Sisters of Providence in 1969 and worked with Providence Health & Services for almost her entire career. Prior to her current position, Sr. Maggie coordinated women and children's services and education classes for seniors. She also taught for ten years at various Catholic elementary schools in Olympia, Vancouver and Yakima, Washington; and in Portland, Oregon.

Trained in Missiology at the Maryknoll School of Theology, Sr. Maggie has a special interest in cross-cultural studies, in international missions and service in developing countries. She has completed postgraduate work in theology at St. Mary's in Moraga, California. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Education at Seattle University and a Master of Arts in Health Care Mission from the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri.

An avid reader, Sr. Maggie enjoys traveling to other countries and learning about different cultures. She is a stamping artist and an accomplished vocalist and also plays the piano and guitar. In her spare time, she makes antique lampshades. She serves on the advisory board for the Letty Owings Treatment Center in Portland, Oregon and the board of the Sacred Heart Children's Hospital Foundation in Spokane, Washington.
