Electronic medical records now common at Providence facilities
Providence Portland Medical Center is the best in Oregon and in the top one percent in the country for electronic medical records according to HIMSS Analytics, an organization that rates hospitals and health systems nationwide.
The distinction recognizes proven approaches to increase patient safety and improve quality, including:
- Computerized provider order entry.
- Bar-coded medication verification.
- Electronic physician documentation.
- Reduced paper-based processes.
The use of electronic medical records has become the standard of care at Providence Medical Group and other full-service clinics in the Portland area.
Why are Providence hospitals and clinics going paperless?
A paperless patient record means that critical patient information can be accessed quickly and efficiently by all care providers. Easy to read, easy to understand - these computerized orders help eliminate errors.
Electronic medical records also offer decision tools, alerts and reminders to providers when they write their orders. Electronic forms support standardized order sets to reduce variability.
Network strength
Providence Health Plan provides incentives for electronic medical record adoption for all its 57 in-plan hospitals and 11,463 participating providers in Oregon and southwest Washington. Other recent network advances include:
- An expanded national network of over 540,000 providers, 4,000 hospitals and 78,000 medical facilities.
- 1,100 online provider profiles, including all primary care providers with 50 or more members.
- 100 percent of network now eligible for e-visit reimbursement.
- 75 percent of claims paid to physicians with pay-for-performance contracts.
