At Providence, you can find what you need to achieve wellness at every stage of life. Enjoy a variety of classes and educational forums that are open to everyone in the community. Classes include those related to childbirth, diabetes education, nutrition, smoking cessation, weight loss and many more.

A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP
Many people suffer from a sleep disorders without knowing it. The negative side effects of untreated sleep disorders can wreak havoc on our quality of life and health. Cardiac problems, stroke, hypertension and diabetes all have a direct link to sleep disorders. Respiratory therapist Al Cady, M.B.A., a former sleep disorder sufferer and manager of Providence's sleep clinic, will review common sleep disorders, treatment options and offers participants a tour of the sleep clinic. A free screening is offered to help determine the need for further testing.

SMOKING CESSATION SERIES
This Providence pharmacist-assisted smoking cessation series is designed to help you quit smoking for good and is based on the American Lung Association's "Freedom from Smoking" course. Led by wellness coordinator George Thomas and respiratory therapist Al Cady, you'll learn a systematic approach to quitting through behavior modification techniques and coping skills designed to help you deal with stress, weight gain and smoking triggers. In addition, a pharmacist will assess your need for medication. Smoking cessation medications and class materials are provided at no additional cost. Pre-registration is required two weeks in advance and class size is limited to 10 people.

DIABETES EDUCATION SERIES
Whether you have a new diagnosis of diabetes or have been dealing with it for some time, Providence offers patients and their families information and support. Certified diabetes educators Jennifer Price, R.N., C.D.E., and Kelly Chambers, M.S., C.D.E., will help you learn how to control diabetes through diet, exercise, stress management and medication. Each month, a series of four classes is offered, with each having the same topics.

FAITH IN ACTION PROVIDENCE COMMUNITY CAREGIVERS VOLUNTEER TRAINING
Volunteer and help your neighbors with long-term health needs and disabilities maintain their independence. Faith in Action is a volunteer caregiving organization that connects volunteers with their neighbors in need. Volunteers bring light back into the lives of those with long-term health needs or disabilities by providing assistance with household chores, transportation, shopping and more. There is a Faith in Action program right here in our community (serving both Hood River and Klickitat counties) that needs your time and talents. Just a few hours can make a world of difference. A light dinner will be served.

TAKE A MOMENT FOR YOUR HEART - HEARTWISE LIVING CLASS AND COOKING DEMONSTRATION
Cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death, claiming more lives than the next five causes of death combined. The more you know about heart and vascular diseases, the better you will be able to care for your body's most important muscle.
Join Xiaoyan Huang, M.D., cardiologist within Providence Heart & Vascular Institute, practicing at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital and The Oregon Clinic to learn more about heart disease and how it can be prevented. READY, SET, GO: DISASTER PREP AND EVACUATIONS MADE EASY
The Mosier microwave fire last summer was a reminder of how vulnerable we are and how quickly our world can change. If a disaster occurs, are you ready to evacuate or to shelter in place without power, water and other services?
In a quick and fascinating session, learn what you can do to help yourself, your family and your neighborhood if faced with a disaster. Two Gorge based federal disaster responders, returning from the 8.0 Samoa earthquake and tsunami response will share recent pictures, stories and experiences. And, a community emergency response team manager will share new lessons learned while evacuating the Mosier fire.

HEALING YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD
Do you consider foods to be either good or bad? Do you have an all or nothing approach to dieting? Were you raised with food being used as a reward or punishment? These are just a few of the factors that can give us a poor relationship with food. Discovering why we eat or don't eat is crucial to developing a healthy relationship with food. Many of us have a distorted relationship with the very thing that keeps us alive and vital - food. Learn how mindless eating can affect our health, and how our approach to food preparation and meal time can make a difference.

THE ALZHEIMER'S FORUM
Are you looking for someone to talk to - someone who understands what it is like to deal with Alzheimer's disease? Whether you have just been diagnosed or you're caring for a loved one, the Alzheimer's forum is a great way to learn from people who understand what you're experiencing. This forum will feature a film review with tips on talking to kids, a featured guest speaker and a discussion panel of individuals who have dealt with the disease as caregivers or loved ones. This is your opportunity to learn more about the disease and its warning signs, find support and tap into local resources.
