HOOD RIVER, Ore. – Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital is offering classes related to diabetes education, sleep disorders, smoking cessation, prostate cancer and end-of-life issues this month.

Following is a list of September classes offered through Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.

WHAT:
Diabetic Education Series. A series of classes to educate and support those with diabetes.

WHEN:
Series of three classes: 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 22, 24, 29

WHERE:
Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Education Center

DETAILS:
Whether you’re newly diagnosed with diabetes or have had the disease for some time, Providence Diabetes Education Services offers patients and their families information and support. Diabetes educators will help you learn how to control diabetes through diet, exercise, stress management and medication.

Registration is required and includes a one-hour private consultation. Insurance often covers the cost. Scholarships are available. A referral by your physician or health care provider is necessary. To register, call 541-387-6379.

WHAT:
Prostate Cancer Support Group. A free community support group.

WHEN:  
5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 22

WHERE:
Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital Education Center

DETAILS:
Facilitated by a Providence Hood River urologist and psychiatrist, this class offers group education, discussion and emotional support for men with prostate cancer. Topics include erectile dysfunction, incontinence, and coping with prostate cancer on a day-to-day basis. Open discussion is encouraged. Companions and loved ones are invited to attend. Fee: free.

WHAT:
Low Cost Prostate Cancer Screening.

WHEN:
8:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 24

Providence Hood River Health & Services Urology Clinic, 1151 May Street

DETAILS:
Each year, more than 186,000 American men learn they have prostate cancer. In fact, prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among men in this country – only skin cancer is more common. Providence Hood River Health Services is offering low-cost prostate health screenings. The screening includes a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a personal exam by Providence Hood River urologist Mike Saltzman, M.D. There is no charge for the patient exam and consultation. A $15 lab fee for the blood test will be charged. Test results will be mailed to patients within two weeks of testing. To schedule an appointment, call 541-387-6125.

WHAT:
Smoking Cessation Series. Due to an overwhelming response, another smoking cessation series has been added to our fall class schedule. Based on the American Lung Association's Freedom From Smoking program, Providence pharmacist-assisted smoking cessation series is designed to help you quit smoking for good.

5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 5, 6, 8, 9, 15, 20, 27
5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 3, 10, 17

WHERE:
Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Education Center

DETAILS:
In this 11-session class series, you’ll learn a systematic approach to quitting through behavior modification techniques, coping skills, social support, and information about managing your weight and stress. In addition to behavioral support, a pharmacist will assess your need for medication. Eight weeks of nicotine patches, Bupropion (Zyban) or Varenicline (Chantix) are provided free to participants who attend the classes.

Registration is required, and space is limited to 10 people. This series requires each participant to have a primary care physician to receive medication. Insurance often covers the cost. To register, call 541-387-8924.

Creating a Loving Legacy: How to Talk About End-of-Life Issues

DETAILS:
End-of-life issues often are not talked about until difficult decisions have to be made. People face medical situations they never could have anticipated and sometimes loved ones must step in when those people are unable to speak for themselves. A loved one can be left feeling burdened by the magnitude of these life-affecting decisions and unprotected during a time of emotional upheaval. Join Anne Kister, of Providence Hospice and Palliative Care, and Diana Level of Anderson’s Tribute Center to learn more about end-of-life care and pre-planning, and how to create a loving legacy.
