PROVIDENCE ST. VINCENT AGAIN GARNERS HONORS
AS ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S 100 BEST HOSPITALS

Latest award one of many for Providence Health System/Oregon Region

March 2, 2006

PORTLAND, Ore. - Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, part of Providence Health System/Oregon region, has received national accolades yet again, being chosen for the 2005 Solucient 100 Top Hospitals award. This marks the ninth time the hospital has been given this honor. Other Oregon Providence hospitals have received this award in the past as well, including Providence Portland Medical Center, Providence Milwaukie Hospital, Providence Newberg Hospital and Providence Seaside Hospital.

“Being named as a Top 100 hospital by Solucient reflects our commitment to excellence, the skills of our physicians and medical staff and the compassionate care we offer to patients,” said Janice Burger, administrator for Providence St. Vincent. “We are incredibly proud of this designation because the award represents a team effort, across disciplines, to be responsive to consumers’ health needs - an approach, and a goal, imbedded throughout our organization, be it at the hospital level or within the health plan,” she added.

Providence St. Vincent’s honor stems from the 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success study, 13th Edition, an annual study conducted by Solucient. The Top 100 award represents organization-wide achievement, requiring concerted effort by all levels of the hospital - the management team, medical staff and employees - to achieve excellence. A balanced organizational performance reflects a hospital’s ability to provide sustainable and reliable health care services and value to its patients and community.

Hospitals are grouped into the appropriate category - “Major Teaching,” “Teaching,” “Large Community,” “Medium Community” and “Small Community” - according to bed size, teaching status and residency program involvement, and 100 total are chosen. The selection of Providence St. Vincent in the category of “Teaching” is based on objective statistical measurement of performance across five critical areas: clinical outcomes, patient safety, operational efficiency, financial stability and growth.

Both Solucient and Modern Healthcare, the leading weekly national hospital trade publication, have the 2005 honorees listed on their Web sites - www.100tophospitals.com and www.modernhealthcare.com, and the complete list of honorees will run in Modern Healthcare’s March 6 issue. Other local area hospitals to have made the list include Southwest Washington Medical Center, also in the “Teaching Hospital” category; St. Charles Medical Center in the category of “Medium Community Hospitals”; and Silverton Hospital in the category of “Small Community Hospitals.”

Providence St. Vincent Medical Center is part of the award-winning Providence Health System (PHS) headquartered in Seattle, Wash. and with a presence in Oregon, Washington, California, Alaska and now Montana. Among the PHS/Oregon region’s most recent awards and honors are “100 Best Companies to Work For,” from Oregon Business Magazine for 2005; “Top 100 Integrated Healthcare Networks,” from Modern Healthcare for 2004; “Energy Star Partner of the Year Award for Excellence in Energy Management,” from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2004; “Largest Health Systems Operating Assisted-Living Facilities,” from Modern Healthcare in 2003; “Circle of Life Award” (for end-of-life and palliative care), from the American Hospital Association in 2003; and “Most Wired 100 Hospitals and Health Systems,” from Health Network Magazine in 2005.

Other Providence St. Vincent honors include the Consumer Choice Award, a national award selected by local consumers, multiple times over the past decade. In 2000, it was the first hospital in Oregon to receive the prestigious magnet designation by the credentialing arm of the American Nurses Association for its impressive nursing services. And in December 2004, it was the first medical facility in the state to garner the Gold Seal of Approval ™ for stroke care and certification as a primary stroke center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.

Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, Providence Health System’s largest Oregon hospital, is renowned for its many centers of excellence, including Providence Heart and Vascular Institute, Oregon Medical Laser Center, Providence Multiple Sclerosis Center, Providence Stroke Center and Providence Center For Health Care Ethics, among others. Its maternity services are highly regarded throughout Oregon, with about 1 in 8 babies born each year at Providence St. Vincent, more than any other medical facility in the state.
