HOOD RIVER, Ore. - Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital is offering classes related to childbirth, diabetes education and smoking cessation at the Education Center at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital beginning in January.
The following is a list of upcoming courses:
WHAT:
Childbirth Connections: Preparing for the birth of your baby.
This series of classes is designed to educate and support expectant parents.
WHEN:
Seven-session beginner courses are:
6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26
6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 2, 9, 16
Two-session beginner courses are:
6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 16
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan 17
WHERE:
Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Education Center
DETAILS:
Choose between a seven-session and a two-session beginner course. Learn about prenatal care, labor/delivery breathing and relaxation, newborn care, breastfeeding and parenting a new baby. A free breastfeeding class also is available.

WHAT:
Diabetic Education Series.
A series of classes to educate and support those with diabetes.
WHEN:
Series of four classes offered
1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 6, 8, 13, 15
WHERE:
Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Education Center
DETAILS:
Whether you have a new diagnosis of diabetes or have had it for some time, Providence Diabetes Education Services offers patients and their families information and support. Diabetes educators will help you learn how to control diabetes through diet, exercise, stress management and medication.
Registration is required and includes a one-hour, private consultation. Insurance often covers the cost. Scholarships are available. A referral by your physician or health care provider is necessary. To register, call (541) 387-6379.

WHAT:
Smoking Cessation Series.
Based on the American Lung Association's Freedom From Smoking program, Providence’s pharmacist-assisted smoking cessation series is designed to help you quit smoking for good.
WHEN:
5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 9, 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 25
5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 4, 11, 18, 25
WHERE:
Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Education Center
DETAILS:
In this 11-session class series, you’ll learn a systematic approach to quitting smoking through behavior modification techniques, coping skills, social support, and information about managing your weight and stress. In addition to behavioral support, a pharmacist will assess your need for medication. Eight weeks of nicotine patches, Bupropion (Zyban) or Varenicline (Chantix) are provided free to participants who attend the classes.
Registration is required, and space is limited to 10 people. This 11-session series requires each participant to have a current primary care physician to receive medication. Insurance often covers the cost. To register, call 541-387-6516.
