PROVIDENCE HOOD RIVER MEMORIAL HOSPITAL SENDS
MOBILE HEALTH UNIT TO HELP RELIEF EFFORT IN VERNONIA

12/6/07
HOOD RIVER, Ore. - A team of health care professionals from the Columbia River Gorge, who expected a normal hospital work day yesterday, quickly packed a customized mobile health care unit instead, and left for the storm-ravaged community of Vernonia.
The three-person medical team packed extra supplies into Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital’s 35-foot-long mobile health unit, which offers free services to the uninsured and under served Gorge communities.
The brightly-colored mobile health unit is painted with the words “Mission in Motion,” reflecting Providence’s commitment to providing health care where people need it - on the road and in the community.
The Providence Medical Group clinic in Vernonia was flooded out by the recent storm. However, Providence’s Dr. Phyllis Gilmore, Vernonia’s only doctor, began working out of a temporary clinic set up in cooperation with the National Guard at the city fire station. This week's patient load averaged about 60 patients per day.
Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital’s Mobile Health Unit will assist the Vernonia clinic medical team and other emergency service providers in the area through the weekend. The unit’s team members tentatively are scheduled to return to work in Hood River on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
The team departing from Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital is led by Jan Loomis, R.N. Loomis is no stranger to disaster medical service. She previously served in an emergency health service role during the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
Other team members are medical assistant Silvia Ochoa and emergency medical technician Bill Palmer, who also serves as the mobile unit’s driver.
Special Advisory to Columbia Gorge communities:
There will be no Providence Mobile Health Unit services in the Columbia Gorge service area Friday, Dec. 7 or Monday Dec. 10, 2007. The unit is tentatively scheduled to be back in the area Tuesday, Dec. 11.
