PROVIDENCE’S NEW FAMILY BIRTH CENTER
WELCOMES ITS FIRST BABY IN
“A ROOM WITH A VIEW”
April 24, 2009
HOOD RIVER, Ore. - Just two hours after Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital opened its newly expanded Family Birth Center, staff welcomed the unit’s first baby. Axel Alcantar-Avila was born April 21 at 2:04 p.m., to Elena Alcantar-Avila and Jorge Alcantar-Orozco shortly after the day the new birth center opened to patients.
“It is always thrilling to deliver a baby,” said Pam Howard, R.N., baby Axel’s attending nurse. “But delivering a baby in one of our new labor and delivery rooms is even more special.”
“The rooms are three times bigger and accommodate the entire family,” added Howard. “New families spend their first few hours or days together in our recovery rooms, which are rooms with a view of Mount Adams.”
The Family Birth Center was the last area to open in the new 36,000 square-foot addition to Providence Hood River. The center features expanded private labor, delivery and postpartum rooms with dedicated family living space and refrigerators, whirlpool tubs, a state-of-the-art nursery and a dedicated C-section suite and recovery room.
The new hospital addition on 12th Street offers expanded services in family birth, surgery, diagnostic imaging and infusion. It opened to the public in March.
"We’re proud to be growing with our community,” said Ty Erickson, Providence Hood River’s chief executive. “Our goal is to provide a supportive and healthy birthing experience, the highest quality surgical services and state-of-the-art imaging technology.”
